The 599 Report of an Investigation is only available to students enrolled in the BMS Honours programme. The responsibility for finding a project and undertaking the research required lies with the student. The student will be supported by a supervisor. Supervisors are appointed by departmental co-ordinators and should have relevant expertise in the subject area of the 499/5999. Second assessors should be chosen as being staff members with general familiarity of the management issues around the subject area.

The responsibility for the 599 Report of an Investigation lies with the student. The students will choose a suitable topic for the 599 project in consultation with the supervisor. The supervisor will assist the student in:

- the development of the proposal

- the research itself and

- the writing up of the results of the research as a report.

The students are expected to consult their supervisors regularly (fortnightly) concerning the progress of their research. The supervisor must approve any substantial changes in the research report.

The results of 599 projects are to be written up in report form and will normally be 13,000 words. The draft should be submitted no later than one month before the final date for completion of the project. The date is recorded on the Learning Agreement signed by the student and the supervisor.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • FINA 599 – Report of Investigation

    By the end of FINA 599 – Report of Investigation, the students will be able to:

    • Develop time management skills and demonstrate they can undertake independent work and provide original and critical analysis.
    • Demonstrate they can undertake research that leads to an in depth literature review for a topic.
    • Demonstrate they can critically evaluate the existing theoretical and empirical evidence that exists on their topic of research.
    • Develop database management skills and undertake competent large scale data collection from designated databases and order data in a way appropriate for the estimation.
    • Form a valid research question or hypothesis to examine empirically or through the use of a theoretical model.
    • Investigate and apply appropriate empirical methodologies to the data in order to examine the research question.
    • Discuss and present the implications and conclusions from the perspective of the relationship to hypothesis tested, extant literature and the back ground theories.
